Beyond the Transcript - Factors Contributing to Excess Credits at Graduation
Description
AACRAO research used graduation data and student survey data from the University of Arizona to identify whether or not the number of excess credits earned by the time a transfer student graduates is significantly different from the number earned by direct entry students. This research extends the current body of knowledge on the topic of transfer credits lost at transfer to information beyond demographics and course taking history. We used discriminant analysis to quantify the factors that contribute to excess credits at graduation for both populations. We also used a survey to solicit responses from almost 1,000 spring 2018 graduating student personal explanations as to why they have excess credits, their use of student success services at the university and whether or not they are bothered by the fact that they have more credits than they needed. For transfer students, we also sought information on how they interacted with the institution from which they transferred. Finally, we conducted interviews with individual students to hear their stories beyond the survey results. This session review the results and encourage discussion around the implications for practice.
