Elon University conducted two studies related to how Comprehensive Learner Records (CLRs) influence employment. The first study was a quantitative survey of employers seeking their opinions on the latest CLR designs and content. This survey was developed in partnership with Parchment to ask employers about the value that CLRs bring to the recruitment process. Results are still being tabulated, but we hope to bring new insights to the CLR landscape.

Concurrently, a second qualitative study was conducted by a student research assistant asking undergraduate Juniors and Seniors about how they articulated experiential learning to employers for internships and post-graduate employment. One crucial component to the CLR is the ability for students to reflect on the content and consider how their experiences can be applied to their careers. Literature about higher education and employment point to a disconnect between institutions’ assertions about learning outcomes and employers’ confidence in recent graduates’ abilities. This study sought to address this by asking what ways students have reflected on their experiential learning. CLRs were discussed in the interviews, and students were asked how this type of record could aid in the reflection.

As AACRAO continues to support CLR adoption, we need to continue pushing for new research in the field. We hope to share this latest research with Annual Meeting participants, as many institutions ask what value a CLR would bring to their students.

Description

Elon University has conducted two studies related to how Comprehensive Learner Records (CLR) influence employment. One study was sent to employers seeking their opinions on the value CLRs bring to the recruitment and employment process. A qualitative study considered CLRs from the student perspective: how do students articulate their experiential learning to employers? The results of these studies will be presented and we will consider these results in the current CLR landscape.
