Director-Enrollment Development and Admissions at Anne Arundel Community College

Vice President for Access and Equity Position Statement

Dear Higher Education Warriors!

I am honored to be nominated to serve and contribute as the Vice President of Access and Equity! Access, equity, diversity and inclusion has been my life's work and passion! It is important to AACRAO and to me, and I relish the opportunity to work with you as we discuss and identify ways to improve access, equity and inclusiveness in our work, departments and greater campus communities. The work of access, equity, diversity and inclusion is hard work, but I have faith in our ability to conduct the work to improve and expand opportunities for diverse, marginalized and underrepresented populations. I believe that the core values of access, equity, diversity and inclusion are not separate from, but are compatible with our values of integrity, civility, opportunity, positivity, innovation and creativity.

If elected, I will engage and inform. To aid and improve our knowledge and skills I will:

Create an Access, Equity and Inclusion Clearinghouse with an advisory board of AACRAO members and others from peer organizations to:

  • Highlight best practices and programs.
  • Provide the tools and strategies that include solutions, implementation, and practical applications.
  • Facilitate constructive engagement, including dialogue to create an understanding about issues that impacts access, equity, progression and completion of diverse and marginalized groups.
  • Teach our membership how to embed the values and goals of access, equity and inclusion in their daily work.
  • Conduct an audit of our peer organizations to determine the methods used to inform their members.
  • Create a digital repository of the scholarship, tools, and strategies for implementation and practical applications that will be available to all members.
  • Conduct workshops during AACRAO meetings that are targeted specifically to registrars, admissions, enrollment manageers, technologists and student service professionals.
  • Facilitate a Great Read book discussion led by a panel of experts in this area via a webinar or as a session during one of our meetings.

I am blessed to work at Anne Arundel Community College, because it has long been committed to improving the student experience and changing their lives by identifying strategies that will allow us to embed the goals and values of diversity and inclusion into our daily work carried out by every office and department, including staff and faculty. The college has received the Higher Education in Diversity (HEED) award for the last three years.

As you determine if my goals and values align with yours, please know that I take the work of access and equity very seriously, that I believe in being a good steward, but I am also someone who approaches this work as a joyful warrior, intent upon engaging as many members as possible!

My contributions to AACRAO have been guided by the following questions:

  • Why should access, equity and inclusion be important to the general membership of AACRAO? I want to engage the informed AND those members who cannot envision how access, equity and inclusion is impactful and relevant to their work.
  • How can I help members identify practices, policies, procedures and attitudes that create barriers to access and equity AND offer relevant and practical solutions for their workplace?
  • How can I demonstrate that being inclusive, equitable and diverse creates a learning environment that can improve access, progression and completion, something we are striving to achieve?
  • What are the best practices and scholarship that informs this work?
