Description
In this 30-minute presentation, Julia Ross, founder of Professional Tutoring, LLC (Fairfax, Virginia), discusses the college fit from four points of view: those of admissions officers, parents, students and high school/independent counselors. The theme of Ross’ presentation is “assembling the pieces.” The presentation emphasizes the need for all four “players” to understand their own offerings and needs and to carefully fit them to each other. It is equally important to be able to identify and acknowledge both good and poor fits. Good fits lead to retention.
Ross identifies admissions offices as the front line of recruitment and suggests specific steps that admissions offices can implement to attract and evaluate students and families beyond marketing materials and on-line applications. Ross stresses the importance of a strong institutional knowledge base at each college or university whether it be community, four-year, private, public, mega or small. She goes on to share the experiences of aspiring college students and their nervous, sometimes helicoptering parents.
Beyond recruitment, Ross talks about important steps and possible programs to retain the sensitive and somewhat coddled generation that is the Generation Z. Across the board, Ross’ message is the right fit for recruitment and admission and strong connections for retention.
