Description
In 2018, the University of Victoria (UVic) launched a strategic enrolment management planning process establishing six institutional goals spanning recruitment, retention and completion for undergraduate and graduate students, domestic and international as well as Indigenous students. These goals, similar to most post-secondary institutions, were carefully developed and refined using institutional data to be measurable, realistic and aspirational, yet attainable. What then makes these goals different and unique to UVic? In this presentation we will speak to how the development of a SEM plan was used as an opportunity to create an implementation strategy that re-centres student experience, student learning and student success at its core. Using the newly approved UVic Strategic Framework, in alignment with the university’s International Plan and Indigenous Plan and with extensive consultation with the University community, the SEM goals, strategies, tactics and actions were keenly focused on realizing the institutional priorities of cultivating an extraordinary academic environment, advancing research excellence and impact, intensifying dynamic and experiential learning, fostering respect and reconciliation, promoting sustainable futures and engaging locally and globally. Connecting all of these through the SEM process has been an intense focus on and commitment to improving the student experience from the recruitment and retention of Indigenous, international and under-represented populations, to ensuring the centrality of student-centred learning and engagement in advising and academic endeavours beginning in first year. The opportunity for experiential learning for all undergraduate students figures prominently as does enhancing a vibrant research culture to ensure the development and success of graduate students. A cornerstone of the plan is UVic’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples through the creation of an environment where Indigenous students are drawn to the university and flourish. This alignment of the SEM plan with the institutional priorities creates a strong fabric of collaboration and shared vision, a unified approach which has the potential to transform student experience. This session will focus on the centrality of student engagement and student learning to SEM, the synergies that can be created through the alignment of SEM with other strategic planning initiatives, as well as the challenges of cultivating a strong collective engagement and effort to ensure effective implementation of SEM.
