Unleashing the Power of PowerBI for SEM
Category
Session
Description
Bow Valley College has developed multi-faceted analytics reports and visualizations using the Microsoft PowerBI business analytics service in two SEM-related areas: application analysis and SEM admissions tracking. PowerBI allows the college to share these interactive "reports" broadly across the college allowing users to to easily drill down into data that they are interested in. Each of these reports is accessed online and contains multiple pages of information which is nicely formatted and presented with the College's look and feel. The multiple higher level graphs, pictographs and reports can be viewed "as is" but with a simple click on the various components, users can drill down to see information related to specific applicant and student groups or program areas. One of the great features of PowerBI is that it allows easy updates and refreshes to the data so that the latest available information is there for users with minimum maintenance effort.
The application analysis reports provide a rolling 4 years of application and enrollment trends. The information can be viewed for specific categories of applicants (e.g. Indigenous, International). Annual application funnel statistics and conversion rates are presented. It provides a demographic profile of applicants including previous schools and there is a pictograph of a typical learner profile. Other information includes first term GPA and withdrawal rates. All of these are available at the global or program-specific level by virtue of drill down clicking.
The SEM admissions tracking report provides year-over-year comparison of applications and admissions to date as well as comparison to enrollment targets. It also highlights programs where admission is lagging. It provides stats on the average time of conversion to next stage.
The session will also demonstrate the quick flexibility of configuration of the presentation of data in PowerBI "on the fly."
