Using Technology to Scale Student Success Innovations

Description
Many higher education institutions struggle to realize the full return on investments of supporting student success and completion efforts . While technology offers growing capabilities to reach more people in efficient ways, these investments are often hampered by decisions for how technology is designed and deployed. Considerable research has been conducted on methods for using technology for teaching and learning purposes; however, few large-scale examples exist that inform how technology can serve as a platform for advancing student success innovation efforts, which tend to combine multiple needs such as learning, task support, and knowledge management. This session examines emerging insights from the Degrees When Due project specifically related to the use of technology for scaling student success innovation efforts. Degrees When Due is a state-of-the-art completion and equity initiative to help states and colleges increase degree attainment among the “some college, no degree” population. This initiative, led by the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), combines the latest thinking and practices on student success, college completion, and equity with state-of-the-art technology and design. The Degrees When Due initiative designed an online learning experience that deploys technology and design methods to help campus teams use real-time student data to implement evidence-based practices for reengaging students or conferring degrees through reverse transfer agreements. This session examines opportunities for higher education institutions to use technology for facilitating student success efforts. We will also explore design principles adopted within the Degrees When Due efforts with a particular focus on transferability to higher education institutions. Finally, we will discuss strategies for advancing technology-supported innovation processes, such as onboarding, and how institutions can use these insights to energize their own student success efforts.
