Description
The University of Iowa serves over 2,200 Veteran and Military Dependent students; a student population representing the fastest growing demographic on campus. We are considered a 'Vet Friendly' campus, but digital access to resources is not easily available. The UI's Office of the Registrar, MVSS (Military & Veteran Student Services) and UIVA (Student Org) collaborated to digitize forms, connect websites, and send targeted messaging via mass email/social media to support modern students and assist in data collection.
The Veteran Worksheet collects demographic and service information used to help secure federal funding for students utilizing the GI Bill or other sources of state and federal funding. The paper worksheet posed potential inadvertent FERPA violations and privacy issues. In addition, paper forms are arduous to process and do not utilize human resources in an efficient manner whether by difficulty reading the forms or extra efforts needed to manipulate data gleaned from the forms.
The UI had three separate webpages for student resources depending on the needs of the student. Students recently searched three different locations depending on the nature of their inquiry: find funding support through the GI Bill Services office, seek academic or social/emotional supports through MVSS, or discover community engagement with the UIVA. Our new website will married these resources to allow the student one central resource no matter their inquiry.
Dispatch messaging and Social Media outlets were the last phase of our electronic overhaul. Using data analytics and student behavior survey responses, we devised a plan to reach our students with important information supporting persistence and progress toward degree.
