Description
Historically, most colleges and universities have designed their services and curriculum around the needs of the traditional student, or the student who typically begins college directly after high school and graduate following four to five years of consistent study. However, a growing number of non-traditional students have enrolled in colleges and universities in increasing numbers. Non-traditional students are a vast and diverse population containing smaller sub-groups with varying needs. Age, transfer credit status, and military status are only some of the identifiers. Unlike the traditional student, these populations have unique needs and barriers that colleges and universities are slowly beginning to address. Because the education system is not designed to address those unique needs, non-traditional students are considered at risk for failure or dropping out.
This presentation will examine the characteristics of adult learners, the role of andragogy in adult learning, and the steps higher education institutions must take to meet the growing needs of this population.
