Moving Beyond Section Numbers: Tools that Effectively Facilitate Course Scheduling for the Benefit of All

Description
Like many institutions, The University of Alabama used section number ranges to denote various characteristics about particular course sections (part of term, online, study abroad, etc.). Over time, we discovered that relying on these designations resulted in a level of ambiguity with the class schedule that led to errors associated with student registration, fee assessment, and the flow of funds to the appropriate departments. In an effort to improve our processes, we decided to clearly define our scheduling terminology and to more fully utilize our coding capabilities within our SIS (Banner) to allow departments to more accurately reflect the "reality" of their course offerings. In light of our changes, section numbers no longer carry any significant meaning and are not used to identify section designations.
This session will discuss the planning and design of our new coding methodology and how it has benefited our entire campus. We will also demonstrate how we use both CourseLeaf CLSS by Leepfrog Technologies to enforce our section coding structure on the front end and prevent errors from being entered to Banner, as well as Argos by Evisions which allows us to quickly identify any issues that need immediate correction prior to the assessment of tuition and fees.
