Description
The onboarding process for freshman is straightforward at most institutions, but the process for transfer students is often different, leaving them confused and disconnected from campus resources. SD Mines is working to improve aspects of the transfer process, such as institutional partnerships, faculty buy-in, orientation, and credit evaluation. This presentation reviews our research from the past year, including a faculty-staff working group, procedural review, and student focus groups.
Our research started with a review of our current transfer student population- Which states and institutions are students coming from? How are they retaining? Are there specific majors students do better or worse in? How are our institutional policies helping or hurting the students? Are different policies needed to facilitate easier transfer?
Next, we worked to identify specific things on our campus that we can improve- course evaluation timelines, faculty buy-in, advising discrepancies, orientation, and communication to the student. Finally, we reviewed our existing partnerships with other institutions and researched potential new partnerships.
Discussion topics will include:
- What are some "sticky" areas in your transfer student onboarding process that are discouraging transfer, and how have you tried to address them?
- What are some of the things your institution does well to onboard transfer students?
- What other data points do you use? How are they different for recruitment vs. student success?
