Vice President for Finance and Investments Position Statement
It is an honor to be considered for the position of AACRAO Vice President for Finance. In serving in this position, I look forward to working with AACRAO and the Board of Directors to assist in the association’s operations and finances in the coming years. My 22 years working in higher education and my past AACRAO involvement has prepared me well to serve in this role.
AACRAO has made great strides in the past several years to build a solid and sustainable financial footing. During my time as AACRAO’s VP Finance (2013-16) I helped set forth both investment and budgetary policies that established the foundation that paved the way for AACRAO now. Specifically, my contributions included: modification of the current funding of the AACRAO’s long-term investments to include the capping of the strategic investments and operational funds from a percentage of the account to a set allotment; establishing criteria and process for awarding the Connor Scholarship; and enacting a gift policy specifying they types of gifts accepted and what AACRAO will do with existing gifts that are outside of the policy. One of the areas I would like to focus on if elected as VP Finance, is to assist the development of the Connor Scholarship to ensure its stability and eventually lead to endowment of funds.
As an adjunct faculty member, I have taught a graduate class titled the “Historical and Financial Aspects of Higher Education.” Understanding finances within the operations of higher education institutions can be replicated into the operations of an association. Along with the teaching experience, my work experience involves overseeing the Student Affairs division (admissions and records, dual credit enrollment, advising and testing, student discipline, housing, student life, multicultural activities, health and wellness, campus police, and emergency management) at South Plains College with an annual budget of more than $15 million. Coupling these two experiences with my TACRAO Executive Committee work as the secretary, it is my belief that I will be able to assist the association in a meaningful way in this role.
Again, it would be a true honor to serve the association in this role for a second term. As an executive at a community college I am involved in the budgeting process for the entire institution and have a strong understanding of financials and investments.
