University Registrar and Executive Director of Enrollment Services at The Ohio State University
President-Elect Position Statement
My leadership roles in AACRAO have been dedicated to strengthening the organization and creating a foundation of support for member institutions and AACRAO members. I see the Board President-Elect Role as an opportunity to continue that work and service.
One of the areas of AACRAO where I have been most involved is content delivery. I served a number of years as a PAC chair, as a member of the Annual Member Program Committee and as chair of the Program Committee for the AACRAO Annual Meeting in Phoenix. I have always seen the work of these groups as being at the core to the services that AACRAO provides. I have been proud to serve in roles that helped facilitate the delivery of content at successful annual meetings. However, just a portion of our membership attends the annual meeting and most of the content that is consumed by our members happens in a variety of other ways. As I look to what I would like to see the Board of Directors and organization achieve in the next few years, it is a broadening of our content delivery. In the coming years, AACRAO will need to look more strategically at how we provide services and professional development content to our members. We have already begun offering more published content and web content versus only making content available to those who attend conferences. Through avenues like webinars and AACRAO on the road, we are taking the content to the membership where they are. Increasingly, we need to offer content that is no-cost or low-cost to our members. An area of focus for AACRAO needs to be building the next generation of professionals and that will mean targeting content towards staff who are new in the profession or new in their roles. Often, these staff don’t have resources for travel or to purchase publications. Curated content on the website and discussion groups will allow members to engage with peers from across the country in a way where their knowledge and experience grows. One of my goals as President-Elect would be to develop a strategy to expand how we develop, collect, and curate content and then deliver it to our members in the format and at the time they choose.
One of the most important moves AACRAO has made is to guide the dialogue on topics important to our profession. We have provided opportunities for members to serve on topic specific task forces and workgroups that help shape policy and identify best practices. From topics like student identity to student success, the work of these groups broadens the knowledge of all AACRAO members and helps inform policies and practices at each of our campuses. It has been wonderful to see AACRAO and the engagement of our membership evolve in this way because it provides an opportunity for us to serve our institution and profession in a way we wouldn’t have had access to in the past. In addition, it provides an opportunity for us to be an advocate for students and to ensure that they are seeing a path to success regardless of which institution is right for them.
The area where we have truly excelled as an organization is the role of AACRAO as an advocate for higher education at the state and federal level. I have been fortunate to play a role in the first two AACRAO Hill Days and I have been impressed not only at the engagement of legislators with our issues but also at the respect that the AACRAO name carries. AACRAO is uniquely positioned to inform Congress and the Department of Education on the issues that are important to our institutions and to student success. I would dedicate energy to expanding the organization’s impact in DC and at the state level. The area where we have just started getting engaged is by encouraging our members to reach out to their Congress person and Senators to share their personal or institution’s perspective. This has been extremely influential and we can point to specific cases where our efforts and those from our partner organizations have changed the content of legislation. I would like to see our next step as an organization be encouraging this level of engagement at the state level. So many of our institutions, public and private alike, are impacted by decisions that happen within our state or region. This can be higher education issues but it can as easily be economic development issues that impact higher education. I would like to build on the success we have had at the national level and build a network of expertise on higher education issues that can help influence policy at all levels.
These are just a few of the services I have valued as a member. In order to maintain and expand these and other services to our membership, we must have a firm foundation. This is the area where I am most proud of my service to AACRAO. I was fortunate to be Vice President for Finance at a unique time in AACRAO’s history. I was able to be part of the growth of our financial portfolio to a point where during my tenure, we surpassed the $10 million mark. This was not just important but personal to me. When I joined AACRAO (not too many years ago) the organization was not on strong financial ground. The board members and leaders before me were able to get the organization on firmer ground but they also set a goal of $10 million. In working with our financial advisors, this amount was identified as a huge stretch goal but one that would allow an organization our size to ensure the ability to weather issues like economic downturns, low conference attendance, a change in one of our service areas or an unplanned emergency or disaster. It was a goal to leave a strong foundation to know that AACRAO will be here to serve our members for another 100 years. As most of you know, much of my focus for the past few years has been on the effort to navigate AACRAO through the purchase of office space. AACRAO has been a renter for nearly 50 years and in the DC market. That combination means that not only do we not have an asset to show for the 50 years of rent but also that that we could have been investing more in our membership. The move to our own building will allow that. As you have seen through our budget materials, we will be able to move to a building we own, not see a significant change in our annual budget and have been able to maintain the value of our financial portfolio. In fact, with the addition of the property, we have diversified our portfolio in a way that will allow it to grow even more in the coming years. Ultimately, this isn’t about the building for the sake of a building, it is about how that allows us to do the work for our members. A strong foundation and our own property allow us to know that our finances will be stable and will allow for greater investment in our membership. As I look at the role the board will play in the coming years, a primary goal will be to look at strategic ways that we can expand the services we provide to our members and member institutions. I look forward to playing a role in building AACRAO into an even stronger organization.
I believe the opportunities for service I have had with AACRAO have uniquely positioned me for an important time for the organization. I thank you for those opportunities and thank you for your consideration for this important role.
