University Registrar at University of Colorado Boulder
Vice President for Records and Academic Services Position Statement
With competing resources, emerging and ever-changing technologies, creative pedagogies and increasingly diverse student bodies, it is imperative that registrars and enrollment management professionals be constantly vigilant, adaptable and innovative. The Vice President for Records and Academic Services of AACRAO must be a thought leader who can inspire and push the envelope while ensuring compliance, accountability and academic integrity remain at the forefront of all we do.
It is also essential that the vice president be able to represent, influence and address a myriad of dynamic and complex academic record issues facing our profession institutionally, regionally and nationally. This position needs to demonstrate a strong understanding of policies, laws, trends and issues that impact all the professions AACRAO serves, including registrars, admissions officers, enrollment managers and financial aid professionals.
I am truly honored to be considered for this very important position. I am a highly dedicated and motivated higher education professional with 25+ years of experience in admissions and records. I have served as university registrar for the past 16 years at two public research institutions, North Dakota State University and the University of Colorado Boulder. At CU Boulder, I’m recognized as a leader for academic policy evaluation and change to breakdown long-standing institutional silos, am an advocate and change maker for diversity and equity, am engaged in numerous compliance initiatives, help problem solve complex implementation and data integration issues related to student records, and am a key contributor to space utilization and planning initiatives. Across these priorities, I ensure that academic integrity is upheld while we strive for innovate, effective and efficient changes to positively impact our many campus stakeholders, especially students. During my decade in admissions, I specialized in policies and processes, state compliance, transfer student and permanent resident concerns, and new student scholarships.
I have served AACRAO in numerous ways at the state, regional and national levels. I have attended every annual meeting since 2003 (and many AACRAO Tech and Transfer, Leadership and SEM meetings) and have presented at most. I served on the Nominations and Elections Committee, which afforded me a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the importance of leadership diversity for our association. We can only achieve excellence when we have fully embraced inclusion and broadly represent the unique needs and positions of the members and institutions we serve.
I also have been actively involved on the AACRAO annual meeting program committee, with the past three years serving as group coordinator for Leadership and Management Development. Prior to this role, I was the chair of the Professional Activities Committee (PAC) for Student Academic Records. This PAC is part of Group III/Records and Academic Services, which directly liaises with the Vice President for Records and Academic Services. As such, I am highly qualified to be able to both represent and advise Group III when it comes to annual meeting planning.
Finally, I chaired the 2016-2017 AACRAO work group on disciplinary notations, which resulted in the publication of a guidance report for members. During my leadership of this work group, I was fortunate to be able to network with AACRAO members who represent a variety of professions and institutions. In addition, I forged relationships with leaders from several affiliated higher education association, including ASCA and NASPA, to seek agreement and shared solutions across our professions.
At the regional level, I am past-president of Upper Midwest ACRAO (UMACRAO) for which I also served as annual meeting program chair. I am currently active in Rocky Mountain ACRAO, and am excited to have CU Boulder host RMACRAO’s annual meeting in 2019.
As Vice President for Records and Academic Services, I will strive to engage members to increase exposure to and representation of our diverse institutions and membership. I believe it is critical to recruit, retain and mentor new and budding admissions and records professionals to both expand professional growth in our field and to ensure future leadership vitality and sustained and diverse membership in our association.
I will strive to ensure that AACRAO and its members have a known and respected voice in discussions focused on meeting the needs of our students, employers and society. I will commit to setting high standards for establishing best practices in our profession. Further, I will work to advance the progress made in finding creative and flexible solutions in the delivery and credentialing of the education provided by our institutions
I have long considered accepting a nomination for an AACRAO board position. However, after transitioning to my role at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2014, it was professionally necessary and responsible that I spend my first few years establishing relationships, identifying priorities and committing myself to ensuring the success of critical projects at my new institution before committing myself to such an important national level role.
If I am fortunate enough to be elected by the AACRAO membership to serve on the Board of Directors, I will embrace this opportunity by working with intention, passion and dedication. I will, to the best of my ability, represent the board’s interests, innovate, serve and advocate on behalf of our members. I look forward to giving back to the association that has provided me countless opportunities throughout my career to expand my knowledge, enhance my professional growth and build my network with other dedicated higher education professionals
