Appreciation of Assets: Defining Success for First-Generation College Students
This session will focus on how the institution should change to better support first-in-family college students. Examining the student experience at the campus level is necessary to discover barriers or gaps within each campus’s unique culture. This session will highlight several practices that have worked well for students and identify areas where the institution can invest resources to help first-generation students acclimate to and persist within the university culture.
First Learning Outcome: Recognize the importance of first-generation student success as higher education braces for the enrollment cliff in the post-affirmative action era.
Second Learning Outcome: Discuss the intersectionality of first-generation college students and summarize the complex challenges that institutions face in supporting this population.
Third Learning Outcome: Develop a plan to explore first-generation college students' experiences on your own campus.
